Coalition Talks Postponed As Two Cabinet Members Test COVID +ve

NETHERLANDS

Talks attempting to put together a governing coalition in the Netherlands have been halted after two Cabinet members tested positive for COVID-19.

  • Prime Minister Mark Rutte was in the same room as the two individuals but was socially distanced and so is not self-isolating. He has tested negative and will take another test in 5 days.
  • Kajsa Ollongren, home affairs minister in the current gov't tested positive, as did Annemarie Jorritsma, who is leading initial coalition talks on behalf of Rutte's VVD.
  • Ollongren and Jorritsma have been meeting with numerous smaller party officials in recent days in order to feel out potential coalition partners. As such the risk of a major breakout of COVID-19 among Dutch politicians is a possibility.
  • The already lengthy process of putting together a governing coalition is set to be put back even further.
