Congress Fail To Approve New Election Timeline Again

PERU
  • Peru’s Congress voted against approving a new timeline for general elections on Wednesday.
    • After five hours of debate, lawmakers rejected a bill that would have advanced elections to December by 68 votes to 54, with two abstentions.
    • The rejection is likely to extend the country’s ongoing political crisis that has embroiled the nation since December last year and has left 48 dead.
  • President Boluarte, after previously saying she would propose a constitutional reform allowing a first voting round to be held in October in the event of another rejection, took to twitter to indicate her intentions.
    • "I regret that Congress has not reached the necessary consensus to advance elections. We will immediately present a bill so Peruvians can democratically elect their authorities in 2023."
