Conservative Candidate Pecresse Into 2nd Place In Latest Ifop Poll

FRANCE

Centre-right Les Republicains presidential candidate Valerie Pecresse is into second place in the latest Ifop Fiducial opinion poll ahead of next year's election. Should this boost in support for Pecresse prove sustained it will likely cause some concern in the camp of incumbent President Emmanuel Macron, with Pecresse the opponent most likely to be able to defeat Macron in a second round run-off.

  • Ifop Fiducual opinion poll 'Which of the following personalities would you like to see win the next presidential election?': Emmanuel Macron: 22%, Valerie Pecresse: 20%, Marine Le Pen: 16%, Eric Zemmour: 11%. Fieldwork: 7-8 Dec, 1,004 respondents.
  • Should Macron face either of the two far-right candidates (Le Pen or Zemmour) in the secound round, the French electoral phenomenon of the 'Republican front' (where voters from the left, centre, and centre right back the moderate candidate) is likely to ensure a second Macron term.
  • However, in a second round against Pecresse (a pro-EU establishment figure who worked under previous Gaullist presidents Jacques Chirac and Nicolas Sarkozy) Macron would not be able to rely on the votes of individuals opposed to the far-right, making it a much tougher electoral contest.
