Conservatives Hold Onto Southend West Seat

Conservative Party candidate Anna Firth has won a by-election in Southend West with 12,792 votes. The snap poll was triggered by the killing of Tory MP Sir David Amess. There were nine candidates on the ballot paper, but Labour and Liberal Democrats did not field candidates out of respect for Sir David's memory.

  • The election was held amid continued turmoil within the ruling Conservative Party, with four senior aides to PM Johnson handing in resignations on Thursday.
