Constitutional Vote Nears, Rejection Seen As Likely Outcome

CHILE

The official campaigns for each side in the upcoming constitutional plebiscite on 4 September are set to wrap up tomorrow, 1 September. The window for opinion polling judging support for the 'approve' or 'reject' camps closed two weeks before the vote, with the reject campaign holding a relatively consistent, but not insurmountable, lead over the approve camp.

  • Investors will be closely watching the outcome of the vote. Accepting the new document, drafted largely by independents and left-leaning representatives, could see some market jitters around concerns that the draft constitution gives significant powers to the gov't with fewer checks and balances.
  • However, it should be noted that many of the more 'extreme' articles, such as nationalising Chile's mining sector, were stripped from the constitution, making it a much more moderate document.
  • On the last day polling was published (19 August), 'approve' garnered an average of 44.1% support to 55.9% for the reject camp. However, the polling margins varied widely.
