UK GFK APR CONSUMER CONF -30 (FCST -35); MAR -36

  • UK consumer confidence recovered by six points -30 in the GfK April report, the strongest since February 2022 due to broad-based improvements across subcomponents.
  • 12-month personal finance outlooks strengthened, suggesting that households may be better financially positioned than initially anticipated, whilst major purchase intentions showed further improvement.
  • 12-month outlooks for the economy rose for a third consecutive month. These key indicators are all stronger than April last year, led by the leap in economic expectations.
  • Despite improvements, spending will likely remain pressured in the near term. Joe Staton, Client Strategy Director GfK reiterated that "the fundamentals haven't changed; inflation is high, real incomes are still falling, the squeeze on household budgets remains".
  • This morning's March retail data is expected to contract by around -0.5% m/m after discounts boosted February numbers. According to the ONS, March sales would only need to be stronger than -1.7% m/m for retail to be a positive contribution to Q1 GDP.
