Consumer Prices Rise 43.68% y/y, Slightly Above Estimates

  • Turkey's consumer prices rose 43.68% y/y in April (Est: +44.10%) versus +50.51% in March, according to data released by the nation’s statistics office this morning. The monthly figure rose 2.39% (Est: +2.60%) versus +2.29% prior, while core prises rose an annual 45.48% (Est: +45.40%).
    • Among the sub-indices, Communications showed the largest increase, with prices rising 5.93% m/m. Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages recorded a 3.95% monthly increase while Housing, Water, Electricity prices fell 1.47% m/m.
  • Meanwhile, producer prices rose 52.11% y/y in April versus +62.45% in March. Prices rose 0.81% m/m versus +0.44% prior.
  • Yesterday evening, President Erdogan announced a major oil reserve discovery – 13 days out from the general elections. Erdogan tweeted: "We discovered a new oil reserve in Cudi-Gabar with a production capacity of 100,000 barrels per day. Good luck to our nation."
  • President Erdogan and leader of the opposition alliance Kemal Kilicdaroglu will continue their election rallies this afternoon. There are no notable data releases left on the docket this week.
