Coronavirus Cases Expected To Continue Downward Trend

Taiwan dollar stronger at the open thanks to a reversal in risk sentiment, USD/TWD moving back towards the 28.00 handle down 0.042 at 28.020.

  • COVID-19 cases are expected to decline again, there were 13 new cases on Sunday, Health Minister Cheng warned that despite the downtick in cases people should not let their guard down. Of the approximately 800 COVID-19 related deaths recorded in Taiwan around 500 of them occurred in June.
  • There could be some concern around a nuclear reactor in Taiwan that suddenly shut down, after main steam isolation valve was closed. The Taiwanese Atomic Energy Council said the reactor was operating at full load and shut down safely, an emergency shutdown recovery operation.
  • Markets look ahead to the June monitoring indicator later in the session, the May print was in line with the previous at 41 which denoted the highest reading since 1987.
