Council Pres. Confirms Beijing Trip Going Ahead Following Jiang Death

MNI (London) - Finbarr Bermingham at SCMP states that EU officials have confirmed that European Council President Charles Michel's one-day trip to Beijing would go ahead as planned in the wake of the death of former Chinese President Jiang Zemin.

  • Jiang died on 30 November at the age of 96. He served as General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party from 1989 to 2002 and as president from 1993 to 2003.
  • The remain questions as to the aim of Michel's visit, with little in the way of concrete policy outcomes expected from his talks with President Xi Jinping.
  • The visit comes as the US seeks to press the EU to take a harder line on trade and integration with China.
