CZECHIA: Pavel Vows To Respect Will Of Voters While Appointing PM Next Year

CZECHIA
  • President Petr Pavel told Blesk that he will decide on the appointment of the Prime Minister next year based on who has the best chance of forming government and would not have any problem if the voters decided that it is current opposition leader Andrej Babis. This comes as the governing coalition and opposition parties are starting to draft strategies for the 2025 parliamentary election, with Babis' ANO leading in opinion polls but usually falling short of outright majority. Prime Minister Petr Fiala recently said that his target is for his SPOLU alliance to garner 30% of the vote, with a further 15% for its coalition partner STAN - rather ambitious objectives considering current polling.
  • President Pavel will appear in the Senate to present his candidate for a Constitutional Court judge. It is expected that the upper house will approve the candidacy of Dita Repkova after she secured recommendations from relevant parliamentary committees. Coincidentally, during his first two years in office Pavel has overseen a major overhaul of the composition of the Constitutional Court as the terms of most judges expired in 2023 and 2024.
  • Looking further afield, Pavel will meet with Prime Minister Fiala and Finance Minister Stanjura after December 7 (i.e. after he returns from a scheduled foreign trip) to discuss his reservations to the 2025 state budget. The head of state said that he has not yet decided whether to sign the bill, but his potential veto could be overturned by an absolute majority in parliament.
