Czechia Seeks Bids For 4 Nuclear Reactors, Budget Data On Tap

CZECHIA
  • Prime Minister Petr Fiala announced that his government decided to commission up to four nuclear reactors instead of just one in attempt to reduce the price per one unit by up to 25%. France's EDF and South Korea's KHNP, which submitted binding bids for one reactor, have been asked for alternative bids by April 15. Westinghouse's bid was rejected after the company failed to comply with the terms of the tender.
  • Fiala also reprimanded Interior Minister Vit Rakusan for commenting on the potential full nationalisation of CEZ without prior agreement. Rakusan on Monday suggested that the government was exploring options for a buyout of minority shareholders in the energy utility, but then retracted his comments.
  • The clock is ticking on the CNB's media blackout, which will start at 14:00GMT/15:00CET. Just ahead of it, Deputy Governor Jan Frait expressed openness to discussing a rate cut larger than 50bp, applying some pressure to the koruna on Wednesday morning.
  • Czechia's January S&P Global Manufacturing PMI will be released at 08:30GMT/09:30CET. After that, the focus will turn to January budget balance at 13:00GMT/14:00CET.
