Debt Limit Talks To Resume At White House

US

Congressional reporters have confirmed that talks between House Republicans and the White House appear set to resume around 12:00 ET 17:00 BST.

  • The location of talks has been shifted from House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's (R-CA) office to the Eisenhower Executive Office Building adjacent to the White House.
  • The change of location may significantly restrict the flow of news today as reporters are unable to stake out the room as they have with McCarthy's office over the past few days - leading to a regular stream of information from Republican negotiators on the status of talks.
  • The White House may have decided to request the location change to impede GOP control of the narrative with McCarthy and his lieutenants holding regular adhoc press gaggles on the Hill to convey their talking points.
  • First up: Speaker McCarthy is due to brief the press momentarily. Livestream via CSPAN: LINK
  • Punchbowl News' Jake Sherman reports that McCarthy is likely to announce, "a decision/announcement today on whether leadership will send the House home for Memorial Day weekend. If there is no deal in the offing/close, GOP leadership will send people home."
