Declaration Speaks On Ukraine, Energy, Climate Change

G20

The G20 declaration, agreed to unanimously by all parties, contains condemnation of the war in Ukraine from 'most countries', as well as broad statements on combating climate change and supporting food security.

  • On Ukraine: "Most members strongly condemned the war in Ukraine [...] There were other views and different assessments of the situation and sanctions. Recognizing that the G20 is not the forum to resolve security issues, we acknowledge that security issues can have significant consequences for the global economy"
  • On global security: "The use or threat of use of nuclear weapons is inadmissible. [...]Today’s era must not be of war." Notable that the last comment has been a long-standing refrain of Indian PM Narendra Modi, who so far has not taken sides in the Ukraine conflict.
  • On energy: "We meet at a time of climate and energy crises, compounded by geopolitical challenges. We are experiencing volatility in energy prices and markets and shortage/disruptions to energy supply. We underline the urgency to rapidly transform and diversify energy systems..."
  • On climate change: "In the context of strengthening global efforts to reach [...] the goals of the Paris Agreement, [...] we reiterate that our policy mix toward carbon neutrality and net zero should include a full range of fiscal, market and regulatory mechanisms[...] We acknowledge the macro-economic risks stemming from climate change and will continue discussions on the costs and benefits of different transitions."
