Defence Sec Austin Speaking With Ukrainian Counterpart

US

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin is now speaking with his Ukrainian counterpart Oleksii Reznikov.

  • This morning wires reported that the US was seeking avenues to supply Ukraine with more advanced weaponry, including tanks, and a short while ago German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock confirmed that Germany will supply Ukraine with advanced weapon systems did not identify specific systems.
  • Jeff Seldin writes: 'In past 24 hours, US has coordinated security aid packages from a half dozen other countries to Ukraine, per a senior US defense official. Declines comment on reports in US role in getting Ukraine tanks.'
  • It is likely that emerging news of Russian war crimes from liberated Ukrainian territory will stimulate a pivot to more overtly offensive military aid. Previous attempts to facilitate the transfer of offensive military hardware including Polish MiG-29s and Slovakian s-300 missile defence systems have stalled as the US was cautious not to appear an active combatant in the war.
