Delegation of African Leaders Meet With Putin; Ukraine Counteroffensive Yields Gains

  • A delegation of African heads of state and senior officials met with President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg on Saturday, Bloomberg report. The meeting followed Friday’s talks in Kyiv with Ukrainian President Voldymyr Zelenskiy. “We are convinced that the time has come for both sides to start negotiations and end this war,” South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said during the talks on Saturday. “Ukraine wants peace more than anyone, but we won’t achieve diplomacy with Russia while they are on our territory,” Zelenskiy said Friday after meeting the African leaders.
  • Ukrainian forces recaptured the village of Piatykhatky in the southern Zaporizhzhia region on Sunday, a local occupying Russian official said as per Politico. This is one of Ukraine’s first wins on that front since the start of the counteroffensive earlier this month.
  • Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will speak at a United Russia party commission meeting on international cooperation and support of compatriots abroad. There are no notable releases on the docket today.
