Democrat Donors Freeze USD$90M In Pledges If Biden Becomes Dem Nominee

The New York Times reporting that some "major Democratic donors" have told the largest pro-Biden super PAC that around USD$90 million of campaign contributions are now "on hold" if President Biden secures the Democratic Party presidential nomination.

  • The Times notes: "The decision to withhold such enormous sums of money is one of the most concrete examples of the fallout from Mr. Biden’s poor debate performance at the end of June," adding that, "The super PAC has been shying away from making major strategic decisions until it gets clarity on who will be atop the ticket, according to a separate person close to the group."
  • The report follows two significant NYT pieces yesterday that hinted at major discord within the Biden campaign. First, the Biden campaign has begun to test the polling strength of Vice President Kamala Harris - it is unclear whether this is to bolster Biden or to investigate the strategic outcomes of a transfer of the nomination to Harris. Second, some close Biden advisors are now discussing strategies for pushing Biden to the exit.
  • The Times report appears to counter to a reaction from Reuters' White House correspondent Nandita Bose who noted after Biden NATO presser: "Several Biden donors, who had expressed concern, are telling me they think [Biden's] performance was "strong." One said "This is the person who can beat Trump. The mistakes are baked in and the upside is strong.""
