Democrat Hopes Increase Of Winning Ohio Senate Race

US

The open Ohio Senate seat of retiring Ohio GOP Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) may be firming as an outside chance of a Democrat pickup as the political environment improves for Democrats.

  • Eight of the last nine polls in the Ohio Senate race have put Democrat candidate Rep Tim Ryan (D-OH) with a lead over Republican opponent JD Vance.
  • According to FiveThirtyEight, Ryan currently has a moderate 1.2% lead in aggregated polling.
  • The Cook Political Report identifies Ohio as a lean Republican race and Ohio as a state which has a strongly partisan Republican voting record.
  • FiveThirtyEight: "Ohio is 12.4 points more Republican than the country as a whole... And it’s not as though Ohio just had a special thing for Trump, either; lately, it’s been GOP across the board, except for [Democrat Senator Sherrod] Brown (D-OH). All of its statewide elected officeholders are Republicans, and both the state House and Senate are strongly Republican."
  • Currently the race is still leaning towards a GOP win but it should be placed with the Florida Senate race, where strong polling from Democrat candidate Val Demings (D-FL) has put her level with high-profile incumbent Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), as races which could see a Democrat upset in November.
