Democrats Urge Action On BBB Climate Provisions

  • 24 House Democrats in vulnerable seats have released a letter demanding President Biden ‘…move swiftly to finalize the most comprehensive legislation that can pass the Senate’ to get Build Back Better climate provisions signed into law.
  • There is increasing fear amongst congressional Democrats that the climate provisions of BBB could be lost amidst the focus on the social spending elements of the bill. The White House is desperate to pass the social care items in BBB, like the child tax credit scheme which Biden has been pushing at public events recently, and this week Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) will be engaging in private negotiations on how to resuscitate the bill.
  • It is possible that a pivot to the climate provisions and a quiet discharge of the high-ticket social spending items will be the most successful strategy for Schumer. This is certainly more likely to obtain the required rubber stamp of moderate Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV).
