Deputy PM Wissanu Says Suspended Individual Cannot Become PM

THAILAND

Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam, known as the outgoing government's legal czar, clarified that a person suspended from taking office cannot be nominated for Prime Minister; otherwise, the endorsing House Speaker could face legal consequences. His comments came as the Election Commission (EC) conducts a probe into Move Forward Party (MFP) leader Pita Limjaroenrat, putting his bid to become the next PM at risk.

  • Thai Enquirer pointed to speculation that some Senators could request the Constitutional Court to suspend Pita from assuming office until the investigation i completed. However, Wissanu said that the Constitutional Court is unlikely to order duty suspension while there is an ongoing case against Pita in the Criminal Court.
  • The MFP have dismissed any allegations against its leader, noting that they are politically motivated. The party said that the discrepancy in evidence on iTV's status as a media company points to a possible conspiracy intended to prevent Pita from taking office.
