DIT: FTA Talks w/US To Continue Post-Election, Advanced Talks In Most Areas

Wires reporting comments from the UK Department for International Trade that trade talks will continue with the US after tomorrow's election, with a schedule in place for the following weeks.

  • Headlines also saying DIT has said that in most chapter areas (the specific sector or subject of talks), the discussions are in advanced stages, with a significant portion of legal text agreed.
  • DIT supposedly stating that both sides are confident UK and US are on course for a comprehensive agreement.
  • Nevertheless, the prospect of a deal being reached in the short term remains slim, given that the deal would require Congressional approval. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has already made clear she holds reservations over the UK Internal Market bill, currently in the UK House of Lords, with regards to the Northern Ireland protocol. She could seek to scupper US-UK FTA if the UKIM is seen as a threat to the Good Friday Agreement.
