Dombrovskis: "We Are Focusing On Not Missing Deadline" For Metals Dispute

US-EU

European Commissioner for Trade, Valdis Dombrovskis, has stated in an interview on the margins of a G20 trade meeting in Jaipur, India, that he hopes to reach an agreement with the US to resolve a steel and aluminium dispute ahead of a October 31 deadline which could prompt a return to punitive tariffs seen during the Trump administration.

  • Bloomberg notes: "If the Oct. 31 deadline is not met, the tariffs on more than $10 billion of exports would automatically return."
  • Dombrovskis: “Currently we are focusing on not missing the deadline. We are trying to concentrate and reach an agreement on global capacity and sustainability of steel and aluminum production — and I can say there is still work to be done.”
  • Dombrovskis made the comments ahead of a key meeting with United States Trade Rep Katherine Tai where the two are expected to hold another round of talks on returning to the Global Arrangement on Sustainable Steel and Aluminum.
  • Dombrovskis: “We are very intensively engaging both at the political and technical level and we see this as one of the deliverables for the EU-US summit.”
