Duda Pushes For Progress On Infrastructural Projects, Poland Reports Flash Q4 GDP

POLAND
  • Prime Minister Donald Tusk used the part of yesterday's Cabinet Council meeting open to the media to grill President Andrzej Duda over the illegal use of Pegasus spyware and other transgressions of the previous administration. The remainder of the meeting, which was supposed to be devoted to the former government's large infrastructural projects, was held behind closed doors. Duda insists that the new government should continue projects such as the procurement of nuclear energy and the construction of a major transport hub in central Poland.
  • The President invited far-right Confederation's Krzysztof Bosak for a meeting at 10:00GMT/11:00CET today to discuss the latter's proposal of a "constitutional reset." Bosak suggests that parliament should amend the basic law and revamp the country's top judicial bodies as their current line-ups remain contested.
  • DGP reported that the government is considering three options for raising the tax-free allowance, which is unlikely to be delivered before 2026. The ruling Civic Coalition vowed to double the annual allowance to PLN60k from PLN30k.
  • Statistics Poland will release flash Q4 GDP data at 09:00GMT/10:00CET. Bloomberg consensus looks for a growth rate of 1.1% Y/Y. The statistics bureau had earlier released a preliminary estimate for the whole 2023 (+0.2% Y/Y).
