POWER: Dutch Nuclear Build Possibly Delayed as Eemshaven Reconsidered as Site
POWER
The Netherlands could have delays in its nuclear new build plans, with the first reactor now unlikely to be operational by 2035 as the government has reintroduced Eemshaven as a potential site for two new reactors, Minister of Environment and Green Growth Sophie Hermans said, cited by WNN News.
- The government had previously excluded Eemshaven, but legal advice recommended including it to avoid future risks.
- “All things considered and with a view to the advice of the State Advocate, the cabinet concludes that it is unfortunately not possible to exclude the Eemshaven area from the EIA procedure,” Hermans added.
- Excluding Eemshaven would likely cause further delays, requiring late-stage investigations for a sustainable decision, according to Hermans.
- Two new reactors, each with a capacity of 1-1.65GW, were originally set to meet 9-13% of the Netherlands' power needs by 2035.
- Technical feasibility studies have been awarded to Westinghouse, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), and EdF.
