E3 Issue Joint Press Release After Tehran Enriches Uranium To 20%

IRAN

The 'E3' signatories to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA, the Iran nuclear deal) - France, Germany, and the United Kingdom - have issued a joint press release noting their 'grave concern' at reports that Iran has enriched uranium to 20% purity, its highest level yet.

  • Statement: "We...note with grave concern the latest reports by the IAEA confirming that Iran has produced uranium metal enriched up to 20% for the first time, and has significantly increased its production capacity of uranium enriched up to 60%."
  • "Iran must halt all activities in violation of the JCPoA without delay. We urge Iran to return to the negotiations in Vienna as soon as possible with a view to bringing them to a swift, successful conclusion. We have repeatedly stressed that time is on no-one's side."
  • There remains significant concern in Europe and the United States as to the future diplomatic actions of the Iranian gov't under the new administration of conservative hardliner President Ebrahim Raisi.
  • The replacement of relative moderate Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif with Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, who is viewed as a close ally of the IRGC's special operations Quds Force, has raised further red flags in the West as to how Tehran will interact with the JCPoA signatories over the coming weeks, months, and years.
