Election recap: President Macron's En........>

FRANCE
FRANCE: Election recap: President Macron's En Marche suffered poor results
across major cities in the June 28 vote as the centre-left environmentalist EELV
won the mayoralties of several major cities including Lyonand Bordeaux.
- Incumbent Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo from the Socialist Party retained her
office, with the En Marche candidate coming a distant third.
- The EELV benefited from running as part of a centre-left/leftist coalition.
- The right-wing nationalist Rassemblement National (formerly the Front
National) won the mayoralty of Perpignan, the first time the party has gained
control of a city of more than 100k residents.
- PM Edouard Philippe retained the mayoralty of Le Havre.
- While the results for Macron and his party were poor, they do not spell
disaster for his chances of re-election. Firstly, the next presidential election
is not until 2022, when the French economy may be rebounding from its COVID-19
induced slump. Also En Marche, as a relatively new political party, does not
have the local structures in place that many more established parties do, making
local campaigning difficult compared to a national-level race.
