Equities Roundup: See-Sawing Higher

  • Stocks are trading modestly higher for the most part, S&P Eminis and the Nasdaq are making modest gains after gapping lower a couple times on the back of some decent program sales. Currently, the DJIA trades down 79.72 points (-0.2%) at 39416.12, S&P E-Minis up 8.5 points (0.16%) at 5378.75, Nasdaq up 83.6 points (0.5%) at 16827.99.
  • Information Technology and Energy sectors led gainers in the first half, semiconductor stocks buoyed the former: Nvidia +3.88%, First Solar +3.51%, Micron +2.68%. Oil and gas stocks gained on the back of rising crude prices Monday (WTI +1.82 at 78.66) -- likely driven by the ongoing geopolitical risk in the Middle East: APA +2.54%, EQT Corp +2.25%, Marathon +1.58%.
  • Conversely, Real Estate and Industrials sectors underperformed in the first half, investment trusts weighing on the former: Simon Property Group -3.09%, CoStar Group -2.19%, BXP Inc -1.94%. Airlines weighed on the Industrials sector amid declining travel data, American Airlines -1.69%, Boeing -1.61%.
  • While the latest earnings cycle is over 85% complete, there are still a number of announcements expected this week: Home Depot early Tuesday; Brinker Int, Samsonite and Cisco late Wednesday; Walmart, Applied Materials and Deere & Co on Thursday.
