Erdogan Calls for Moving Turkmen Gas West

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is eager to start moving Turkmen gas to Western markets he said earlier today.

  • "Nowadays, Caspian gas [from Azerbaijan] is supplied to Western markets through Turkey. It is also necessary to start working on Turkmen gas supplies to Western markets," Erdogan said.
  • Ankara is ready for such cooperation with Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan, he said.
  • Putin touted Turkey as a potential gas hub to redistribute gas flows, something Erdogan has been eager to pursue. It remains unclear if Europe would be willing to pull in gas volumes via a Turkish gas hub – a move that would push European energy dependence back towards Russia.
