Erdogan Cancels Election Appearances; Trade Deficits Narrows in March

  • President Erdogan has canceled his election appearances for a third day on Friday after falling ill with an intestinal infection. Erdogan had been due to appear at a bridge opening and a political rally, but his schedule changed to show he would attend the opening ceremony via video link instead.
  • Turkey’s trade deficit narrowed to $8.34bln (Est: -$8.60bln) in March from a revised -$12.10bln in February, data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute revealed. Exports rose 4.4% y/y while imports rose 3.4% y/y.
  • Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Donmez said the first reactor of Akkuyu nuclear power plant will be put into operation in a year, Hurriyet report. “We will have commissioned all 4 reactors within 4 years,” he said.
