Eskom Escalates Loadshedding, Gov't Looks To Revamp Immigration Laws

  • Eskom announced that the shortage of generation capacity forced it to ramp up loadshedding for the week ahead. The utility started implementing Stage 1 power cuts yesterday, switching to Stage 2 this morning, which will be followed by Stage 3 until Tuesday morning. Thereafter, Eskom will move between Stages 1, 2 and 3.
  • The government unveiled a white paper on citizenship, immigration and refugee protection. Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said that proposed legislation will remove loopholes and contradictions in the existing regulations and argued that South Africa should have curbed refugees' access to social benefits.
  • Budget Office's Edgar Sishi told MPs that the National Treasury is working with the SARB on the gold and FX contingency reserve account. The official noted that the ZAR27bn contingency reserve in the MTBPS is insufficient.
  • The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) will conduct nationwide voter registration this coming weekend and said it is hoping to boost participation among first-time voters. The IEC will brief the media on the matter this Wednesday.
