Eskom Resumes Loadshedding, President Ramaphosa To Address Nation

SOUTH AFRICA
  • Eskom resumed loadshedding at Stage 2 on Sunday afternoon until 16:00 on Monday, citing the "need to replenish emergency reserves ahead of the anticipated cold weather that will increase the demand or electricity over the next few days". The utility will implement Stage 3 power cuts from 16:00 today until 05:00 on Tuesday and is looking to move between Stages 2 and 3 thereafter until further notice.
  • President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver an address to the nation at 18:00GMT/20:00SAST, following South Africa's victory over New Zealand in the Rugby World Cup final. The leader had previously indicated that he could announce a public holiday if South Africa won the tournament.
  • Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana will deliver his closely watched Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) on Wednesday (November 1). The official is expected to show a downbeat fiscal outlook, telling his critics over the weekend that without action "we run out of cash by the end of March".
  • Later this week, South Africa will host the 20th Africa Trade and Economic Cooperation Forum (so-called AGOA Forum) from November 2 to 4. The conference provides an opportunity for Pretoria to continue its efforts to mend ties with the US as part of a difficult balancing act of navigating between major geopolitical actors.
