EU Announces 'Solid Package Of Russia Sanctions'

EU-RUSSIA

Ursula von der Leyen EU Commission President has announced EU sanctions on Russia. 27 European Union members nations have unanimously agreed on an initial set of sanctions targeting Russian officials and banks over their actions in Ukraine.

Ursula von der Leyen said the EU has prepared ' a solid package which contains a number of calibrated measures.'

  • EU sanctions will 'target banks that finance the Russian military apparatus that contribute to the destabilisation of Ukraine.'
  • She said that the EU will be 'Banning trade between breakaway regions and the European Union as after the illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014 and banning Russian from raising money on EU financial markets.'
  • Ursula von der Leyen went on: 'Germany is absolutely right on Nordstream 2. This crisis shows that Europe is too dependent on European gas. We need to diversify and invest in renewable energy.
  • Our action today is a response to Russia's aggressive behaviour and we are prepared to go further if Russia continues its aggressive behaviour.'
