  • Sefcovic is set to announce a three-month extension to the grace period on the export of chilled meats from Great Britain to Northern Ireland, thereby avoiding customs checks.
  • Speculation is that the EU will say this extension is to allow for NI supermarkets to have extra time to prepare their supply chains for when customs checks on goods from Great Britain are implemented.
  • The UK had threatened to unilaterally extend the grace period, risking the EU taking legal action. This compromise will avoid that situation for the next three months at least.
  • There still remains little to no sign of either the UK gov't or the EU seeking to work out the evident problems within the Northern Ireland protocol, with the non-negligible prospect that the UK eventual withdraws from the protocol in order to protect UK territorial integrity.
