EU Foreign Min Calls For Greater Sanctions On Tehran For Supplying Russia

While attending a European Union Foreign Affairs Council meeting, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis has called for the imposition of heightened sanctions on Iran for its alleged provision of drones and other military equipment to Russia for use in its war against Ukraine. Already slim prospects of any progress on the Iran nuclear deal in the short-to-medium term diminishing by the day as rhetoric esclates.

  • Landsbergis: "Today at the Foreign Affairs Council I urged my colleagues to help Ukrainians achieve peace on their own terms. For this we need to prioritise financial assistance programs, activate the 9th package against Russia and sanction Iran for supplying weapons to the aggressor."
  • Iran has come under increased scrutiny in recent weeks and months as it has supplied Russia with low-cost drones used to target Ukrainian civilian and military infrastructure.
  • Earlier today, the bloc announcedthe imposition of sanctions on 29 individuals and three entities involved in the crackdown on protests seen across Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini.
