EU-Mercosur Ratification On Agenda In Scholz-Lula Meeting

GERMANY

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is shortly due to hold a meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

  • Scholz will be the first western leader to meet with Lula since his inauguration earlier this month and comes as Scholz attempts to reset relations with Brazil after a period of strain during the administration of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
  • Scholz will likely push Brazil to move to ratify the EU-Mercosur free trade agreement which was agreed in principle in 2019.
  • Argentinian President Alberto Ángel Fernández said after a meeting with Scholz yesterday that the agreement: "...would benefit Latin America and especially Mercosur, it would benefit Europe, and it would also strengthen multilateralism.”
  • The Lula Scholz meeting was preceded by a meeting between Germany's Minister of Economic Cooperation and Development Svenja Schulze and Brazilian Environment Minister Marina Silva with an aim to restart the German-led Amazon Fund which was mothballed by Bolsonaro.
  • Progress on environmental protection is considered key to releasing the brakes on EU-Mercosur ratification as EU member states expressed reservation to the deal in light of the rate of deforestation in Brazil.
