EU, Tunisia Sign MoU for Elmed Interconnector Funding

The EU and Tunisia signed a MoU for the Elmed Interconnector, which finalises the funding for the 600MW interconnector between Tunisia and Italy according to Bloomberg.

  • The agreement was signed by the EU’s envoy to Tunisia, Marcus Cornaro, and Tunisia’s Energy, Industry and Mining minister, Fatma Thabet Chiboub.
  • The interconnector will run from the electrical substation at Partanna (Sicily) to the substation at Mlaabi on the Tunisian peninsula of Capo Bon, with a total length of 220km.
  • The project is scheduled to be operational by 2028, Terna project director, Francesco Salerni said.
  • The funding will come from the World Bank, providing €146mn, as well as from three European lenders including the EBRD and KfW, that will provide €125mn, STEG official Raoudha Haouala said.
