European Commission President Says She Wants Ukraine In EU

UKRAINE

Ukraine is "one of us and we want them in the European Union", European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told Euronews, but stopped short of promising a fast-track accession route requested by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

  • Von der Leyen noted that the EU "have a process with Ukraine that is, for example, integrating the Ukrainian market into the single market. (...) So many topics where we work very closely together and indeed over time, they belong to us. They are one of us and we want them in."
  • Zelensky had earlier asked EU leaders to facilitate Ukraine's accession to the bloc. Kyiv currently has an association agreement with the EU but is not among the countries officially negotiating accession. The idea of offering Ukraine an accelerated track for integration has been backed by Slovakia and Poland.
