Europe’s LNG Imports From Russia Rise 40% In Jan-Oct

Europe is importing record-levels of Russian seaborne gas compared to previous years, suggesting the region has not completely shaken off its dependence on Russian gas, according to the FT.

  • Russian LNG totalled 17.8bcm in Jan-Oct this year. Russian gas pipeline flows stood at 62.1bcm during the period.
  • Russian LNG accounted for 16% of European seaborne imports during Jan-Oct this year.
  • Russian LNG imports rose by 40% in Jan-Oct this year, compared with 2021 levels.
  • There are no sanctions on Russian gas, owing to its importance to some European nations’ energy security.
  • But gas flows through the Yamal pipeline have been halted since May, and Russia cut flows through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline to Germany this summer.
  • Russia has also recently threatened to restrict supplies to western Europe through the only pipeline still connecting the region through Ukraine.
