Ex-President Mbeki Slams ANC For Shielding Ramaphosa Against Phala Phala Probe

SOUTH AFRICA

News24 reports that former South African President Thabo Mbeki blasted the ruling African National Congress for using its majority in parliament to vote down any investigation into the Phala Phala scandal and protecting President Cyril Ramaphosa "at all costs."

  • Mbeki, who served as the head of state from 1999-2008, wrote this in a long letter dated March 29, which he sent to ANC deputy leader and South Africa's Deputy President Paul Mashatile.
  • Mbeki argued that there is no point in voting against a probe into the so-called Farmgate scandal if President Ramaphosa did nothing wrong, as the party's stance alienates it from the "masses of our people."
  • The ANC last December voted against launching an impeachment probe against Ramaphosa. Last week, it again rejected a motion to form an ad hoc committee to investigate the matter.
