Farage Elected; Con Total Likely To Fall Short Of Exit Poll Projection

At the eigth time of trying, right-wing anti-immigration Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has been elected as an MP for the first time for the seat of Clacton. While only likely to be one of the smaller parties in parliament, Farage's significant political profile is likely to mean that he will be a loud voice in the House of Commons advocating for stricter immigration controls.
- In the most notable Conservative loss of the evening (so far) Defence Secretary Grant Shapps has lost his seat of Welwyn Hatfield to Labour. Based on some of the significant losses the Conservatives are experiencing in the party heartlands to both the Labour and Liberal Democrat parties it appears likely that the final Conservative seat share will fall notably below the 131 total projected in the original exit poll.
- Psephologist Sir John Curtice writes on the BBC "So far, the Conservatives have been losing every seat where their lead over Labour was less than 30%. Similarly, the party has also lost every seat it has been defending against the Liberal Democrats where the majority was less than 30%."
- Former Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn, ousted from the party under Keir Starmer's leadership, has been re-elected in Islington North as an independent.
