Federal Judge Strikes Down GOP-Leaning Congressional Map In Georgia

US

A federal judge has struck down a new congressional map in Georgia, ordering the state legislature to redraw the map to better reflect the state's black population. The decision is seen as likely to provide Democrats what could be a crucial additional seat in 2024.

  • CNN notes that, due to ongoing legal challenges to maps drawn in the recent 10-year redistricting cycle, "the fate of anywhere from 14 to 18 House seats across nearly a dozen states could turn on the results of these fights."
  • The minor alterations are considered more critical ahead of the 2024 House election as Republican hold a razor thin five-seat majority in the House.
