Fetterman Opens Strong Polling Lead In Crucial Pennsylvania Senate Race

US

John Fetterman, the Democrat candidate for the Pennsylvania Senate race has returned to the campaign trail after recovering from a stroke he suffered in mid-May. Despite being absent from campaigning since the primaries he has built up a sizeable lead over his opponent, Trump-endorsed celebrity heart surgeon Mehmet Oz.

  • Fetterman is difficult to place on policy but has cultivated broad support in rural areas which have long been Republican leaning. Politic writes: "His policy positions are left of center—sometimes pretty far left of center — on everything except fracking, which he supports. He favors criminal justice reform, raising the minimum wage, supporting the LGBTQ community, and legalizing “dreamers.” He’s even in favor of abolishing the filibuster if that’s what it takes to advance a progressive agenda."
  • On the filibuster, Fetterman's position may have significant policy implications. Wisconsin Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes has also stated a support for filibuster reform is polling strongly in his Senate race in Wisconsin against Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI).
  • It is a very long and uncertain road to filibuster reform but having two more Senators in the Democrat caucus who openly support abolishing the filibuster is likely to centralise the debate once more and edge closer to the ruling party being able to pass legislation with a simple majority.
