Fico Arrives In Prague, Education Unions Hold Nationwide Strike On Monday

  • Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico arrived in Czechia for his first foreign visit since taking power and started by meeting with senior lawmakers. By convention, new heads of state and government in Czechia and Slovakia make their first official foreign trips to the other country. Lidove Noviny reported that Fico's visit almost ended up in an international scandal as Czech President Petr Pavel initially refused to meet him and only changed his mind after the intervention of his Czech counterpart Zuzana Caputova. Later in the day, Fico will meet with Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala, President Petr Pavel, as well as their predecessors Andrej Babis and Milos Zeman.
  • More than 60% of Czech schools will participate in a strike on Monday, according to a report by Lidove Noviny. The deputy head of the Trade Union of Education told the newspaper that the Prime Minister's comment describing the strike as "irresponsible" led more schools to approach the union and declare their intention to join the strike.
  • Czechia's economic sentiment improved to 93.1 in November from 92.8 prior, thanks to an improvement in business confidence to 93.5 from 92.8. Consumer confidence deteriorated to 90.7 from 92.7.
