Final Results Confirm Comfortable Win In Calabria For Centre-Right

ITALY

The final results from the Calabrian regional election show a comfortable win for centre-right coalition presidential candidate Roberto Occhiuto. Occhiuto's win does not come as a major surprise, with former PM Silvio Berlusconi's centre-right Forza Italia long having held a significant presence in the southern region.

  • Occhiuto (FI): 54.5% (-0.8), Bruni (Independent, Centre-Left): 27.7% (-17.0), De Magistris (DemA-LEFT): 16.2% (new), Oliverio (Independent, civic lists): 1.7% (new), +/- vs. 2020 election
  • The win comes as the sole bright spot in a difficult day for Forza Italia and its centre-right/right allies, Matteo Salvini's League and Giorgia Meloni's Brothers of Italy.
  • In all the major mayoral elections, the centre-left candidate (either from or backed by the Democratic Party) won in the first round or is in pole position to win in the second round.
  • The declining fortunes of the League in particular, battered by Salvini's choice to enter into gov't with most other parties under PM Mario Draghi, could in time spark greater political risk. With the League joining Draghi's gov't the party has ceded territory to the Brothers of Italy, which now sits as the sole major opposition party in parliament.
