Firms’ Still Plan To Raise Prices More Than Normal

  • The below chart from the Business Leaders Pulse (BLP), a monthly survey within the quarterly BOS, showed some sizeable moderation in both the size and frequency of price changes over the past twelve months but was more mixed over the next twelve months.
  • Forward-looking expectations were little changed with a net 23% expecting larger-than-normal price increases over the next twelve months, but those expecting to change prices more frequently on net fell from 21% to 18%.
  • With this last observation taken Sep 30, it’s not surprising that is appears similar to new Dep Gov Vincent noted on Oct 3 that “while we see signs of pricing practices gradually returning to normal [compared to larger and more frequent price changes post-pandemic], they are still not where they were before the pandemic.”
