Fmr. House Chief Dep Whip Ferguson Won't Run In '24, Opens Spot On W&M Cmte

US

Former House Majority Chief Deputy Whip Drew Ferguson (R-GA) has announced that he will not seek a fifth term in office for Georgia's third congressional district in 2024. First elected in 2017, Ferguson served as Chief Deputy Whip from 2019 through Jan 2023 under then-Chief Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) under the speakership of outgoing Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).

  • Georgia's third congressional district, on the border with Alabama but also touching the outskirts of metropolitan Atlanta, is deeply Republican, having returned GOP reps since 2007 and voted for every Republican presidential candidate since 2000.
  • Ferguson also served on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee (which oversees tax policy), and becomes the fifth sitting committee member to announce their retirement come 2024. With two Republicans and three Democrats stepping down, there will be a flurry of interest in who obtains senior positions following the 2024 election.
