Lebanese Hezbollah has issued a statement saying that Israel must comply with the stipulations of the 60-day ceasefire agreed in Nov 2024, and that the Lebanese state should push for guarantees that Israel will completely withdraw as agreed. Hezbollah: "Any breach of the 60-day deadline constitutes a blatant violation of the agreement, an infringement on Lebanese sovereignty, and an escalation of the occupation into a new phase." Earlier this week, Lebanon's new president, Joseph Aoun, demanded Israel's full military withdrawal from Lebanese territory by the 26 Jan deadline. In a meeting at the weekend, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told Aoun he would “exert utmost efforts” to ensure the “secure” withdrawal of Israeli forces.
- In the first visit to Lebanon by a Saudi foreign minister in 15 years, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud seat earlier today that he was 'optimistic' about Lebanon's future and stressed the importance of economic and political reforms.
- The Israeli security cabinet is meeting today on the subject of a withdrawal from Lebanon but isbelieved to be waitingon signals of expectations from the Trump administration in the US.
- While Hezbollah is a significantly reduced force following the conflict in Lebanon, there is the non-negligible risk that violence flares up again either due to ceasefire violations by Hezbollah, or the IDF remaining on Lebanese territory.
