For Min-Expect China To 'Actively Support' Dialogue Efforts w/North

SOUTH KOREA

Wires carrying comments from South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin at a virtual meeting w/Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, stating that he 'Expects China to actively support South Korea's efforts for dialogue with North Korea' and called on Beijing to encourage Pyongyang to "refrain from further provocations" .

  • Wang states that China 'will play a constructive role in the Korean Peninsula issue'. The two also talked of the prospect of a visit from Chinese President Xi Jinping to South Korea.
  • Comes days after Sung Kim, US special representative for North Korea, and Liu Xiaoming, China’s special representative on Korean peninsula affairs, held online talks regarding what the US has called North Korea's “increasingly destabilising and escalatory behaviour” following a record year for ballistic missile launches directed by Pyongyang.
