Former Justice Min Adrianzén Sworn In As PM Following Otarola Resignation

PERU

Peruvian President Dina Boluarte has sworn in former Minister of Justice under Ollanta Humala and recent Peruvian representatives to the Organisation of American States Gustavo Lino Adrianzén Olaya as prime minister. This follows the resignation of Alberto Otarola on 5 March following the leak of a compromising audio recording. Bloomberg: "Panorama TV reported over the weekend that Otarola had a romantic relationship with a woman who obtained a government job. The TV program played an audio recording alleged to have taken place between the two."

  • Bloomberg: "The prime minister is a powerful position in Peruvian politics, heading the president’s cabinet and liaising with Congress. Otarola, a former defense minister who also served under a previous president, had a prominent role as a chief spokesman and face of the government in the administration of less politically experienced Boluarte."
  • A new PM comes a short time after other senior ministers in the form of the Minister of Economy and Minister of Energy and Mining werereplaced in a reshuffle. With a fractured political balance in Congress, the prospect of further political instability in Peru remains elevated.
  • Latin News: "In July 2015, Adrianzén Olaya was accused of "gagging" Julia Príncipe , a public prosecutor specializing in Money Laundering Crimes. The lawyer claimed in a television program that the then minister had asked her for explanations for her statements to the press regarding the investigations involving former first lady Nadine Heredia." Adrianzén resigned as Justice Minister in October of that year ahead of a censure vote in Congress.
