FRANCE: Scholz Hosts Macron In Berlin, Presser Imminent

GERMANY

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz hosts French President Emmanuel Macron this evening in the first meeting between the two on German soil since Scholz took office.

  • The two will hold a press conference around 1745CET (1645GMT, 1145ET), link here.
  • The meeting had been intended for the two leaders to discuss the French presidency of the Council of the European Union, Germany's G7 presidency, and issues such as climate change. However, the escalating crisis on the Russo-Ukrainian border is likely to dominate proceedings.
  • Germany under major pressure from hawkish nations in Western alliance to take a tough line on Russia re: sanctions. However, Berlin seems averse to damaging own economic interests (i.e. threatening NordStream II pipeline) to dissuade Russia from invading Ukraine.
