French Nuclear Update: Nuclear Availability to Rise 23% YoY This Winter

French nuclear output is forecast to average 50GW over this winter, up by 23% from last year, despite recent outage extensions according to BNEF.

  • BNEF revised down French nuclear output for December by 7% to previous forecasts to 45GW, following the unplanned extensions to maintenance.
  • Actual nuclear availability fell to 59% at the start of December, down from EdF’s initial outlook of 78% of availability for the period due to unplanned outage extensions.
  • The 1.31GW Nogent 2 unplanned outage has been extended until 30 December, from 26 November previously scheduled, EdF remit data showed.
  • France currently has 41 out of 56 units available as of 4 December, RTE data showed.
  • EdF’s nuclear output target for 2023 is set at 300-330TWh and at 315-345TWh in 2024.
  • EdF’s CEO Luc Remont said late November France is heading into winter with confidence in terms of power supply, as nuclear availability improved from last winter, while consumers must continue to save energy.
  • The new Flamanville 3 reactor is currently undergoing last testing and is fuel loading is scheduled to begin in 1Q 2024. The reactor is scheduled to be connected to the grid in mid-2024.
